She now has 10 science books out and one language book she just introduced. The books are self-published because she wanted to see if she could do it on her own, she didn’t want to share the profits and she wanted to build her line quickly. These are not little concepts: neurology, chemistry, cardiology, anatomy, cellular biology and more.

She does have her peers from her days at UT review them, and she tests them out on kids to make sure she’s explained a concept well. Terrazas writes, illustrates and does all the layouts for her books, which sell for $11.99 in paperback and $19.99 in hardback. She still loved science and wanted kids to love it, too. Terrazas studied science at the University of Texas and thought that she would become a doctor, but she felt very done with school.

That evolved into a tutoring service that she still has, though about a year ago her books began to be her main job. Terrazas, 29, who grew up in Austin and went to Bowie High School, had many of her friends working for her in a giant Circle C baby-sitting network in high school. April Chloe Terrazas started her Super Smart Science Series books two years ago as a way to bring together two things she loved: teaching kids and science.
